249. The Speedboat Killers: The Deaths of Charlotte Brown & Nancy Manni

Sometimes, being in the wrong place at the wrong time can have deadly consequences. Sometimes, it's not just the place that's the problem; it's the who that you're with. In the two cases we discuss in this episode, neither of these men intended to kill their victims. They did not set out that morning to take the life of another human being. Nor did they gain anything from the demise of their victims. But they were responsible for their deaths all the same.

The first case is in London, England, where twenty-four-year-old Charlotte "Charli" Brown from Essex had been looking for love on Tinder for some time but had had no luck. She wasn't interested in having a good time; she was looking for a long-term relationship. Before long, she began talking to a thirty-year-old web designer named Jack Shepherd. On December 8th, 2015, a Tuesday night, Jack took Charlotte to a restaurant on the 32nd floor and wined and dined her. Everything was going well until Charlotte was killed in an accident involving Jack Shepherd's speedboat.

The second case is a request from Jenn K on behalf of her mother. Thirty-one years ago, on August 30th, 1993, the body of a 33-year-old Nancy Lynn Manni was found floating in the Chesapeake Bay just 250 yards from the Cove Point Lighthouse in Cove Point, Maryland. Nancy had lacerations on the back of her legs and buttocks, which were most likely made from a propeller. The coroner felt that Nancy had been alive and trying to swim away when she was run over by a boat. It would take years and being featured on Unsolved Mysteries to discover who was responsible for Nancy's death.

248. Innocent Victims: Eastburn Murders

Katie Eastburn had posted a classified advertisement in a local newspaper catering to the military community near Pope Air Force Base and Fort Bragg to sell their English setter, Dixie. At the time, Katie's husband Gary, an Air Force captain, was away attending a squadron officer's school in Alabama, leaving her at home with their three young children. The couple had met twelve years prior at a singles' softball game, and Gary vividly remembers her powerful impact on him, saying, "It was like somebody hit me between the eyes with a ball-peen hammer. I was madly in love with her." They tied the knot in 1975, and Katie became pregnant three years later. In 1983, the Air Force relocated Gary and his family to Pope Air Force Base, where he served as air traffic control chief. When Gary proposed the idea of moving to England, Katie had some reservations; however, her passion for horses played a significant role in her decision, and after Gary assured her that she and their daughters would have ample opportunities to ride in the English countryside, she agreed to the move. Gary typically made Saturday morning calls to check in with Katie while he was away, but when he tried to reach her on Saturday, May 11, she didn't pick up, and he wasn't overly concerned yet. He tried repeatedly that day to reach Katie, but the calls went unanswered. When a neighbor noticed the newspapers were piling up, he looked in a window and made a gruesome discovery.

247. Death of a Butterfly: Heather Palumbo-Jones

Thank you to Holly Elenor for the episode request.

The entertainment district of Beale Street in Memphis, Tennessee, draws people from all over the world to participate in its blues music and dine on the famous Memphis-style barbecue.

Home of Sun Studios and Graceland, it’s often referred to as the birthplace of rock-n-roll. So, it might surprise some people to find a little hotspot, an inconspicuous-looking (in kun spic yoo us) building, where the Latin beats pulse through the crowd of dancers. They go there for the salsa dancing with its fast, syncopated celebration of life. Dancers are bathed in pink and purple lights and sweat the night away.

It was there, in that little rumba room, where Heather Palumbo-Jones would spend one of her last happy nights on earth, wearing a brand-new dress and a big beaming smile. She danced for three hours with one of her best friends, something she might not have even been able to do just a year or two earlier.

It would turn out to not just be one of Heather's last happy nights on earth; it was one of her last nights on earth, period.

246. The Leaf Killer: Matthew Hoffman

It is 4 pm on Thursday, November 11, 2010, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, when a phone call comes from police. On the line is Valerie Haythorn, manager of the nearby Dairy Queen, who is concerned that her employee 32 year- 32-year-old Tina Herrmann, has not shown up to work today or the previous day. This was very unlike Tina’s character, who has always been dependable. Valerie tells the police she is so worried she goes to Tina’s house to check on her. She is there as she is phoning the police. She informs police that she went inside the house via a rear window. Tina lives in the home with her two children, 13-year-old Sarah and 11-year-old Kody, and her live-in boyfriend. She informs officers that there is blood everywhere. The officer tells her to stay outside, and they are on their way. Once officers are on the scene, they encounter a blood bath. The problem is that although blood was everywhere, there were no bodies. It was as if the family had disappeared.
